IT’S TIME TO REENVISION DOCTORATE IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) DISCIPLINES!
It is now widely recognized that the current model of PhD in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) discipline dating back to WWII does not serve the purpose of training today’s students. Specifically, its design focusing on curiosity-driven fundamental research for doctoral dissertation does not prepare most of them sufficiently for careers in industry that will employ them. To rectify this disconnect between the ‘product’ and its potential ‘customers’, a new degree track of doctoral training, called Pasteur Partners PhD (P3), has been introduced. It is a student-centered training model of STEM PhD based on use-inspired dissertation research, and built on industry-university partnership. It requires co-advising of the student by an industry scientist, 1-2 semesters of Residency at partner’s organization and courses in essential professional skills, while keeping the rigor and depth of traditional PhD. The challenges and benefits of the P3 model will be shared in this presentation.
